Affirmations

A Look at Affirmations and its Application

After a previous post that I made, “Re-program Your Mind”, even though affirmations weren’t directly stated to try out or even mentioned, it automatically came to my mind as a possible way to re-program my mind. I’ve heard about affirmations in the past and I may have read a few in some variations before but haven’t used them in a serious manner and in an extended amount of time.

First off, for those not in the know here is a short video that I searched for on Youtube that can explain what an affirmation is:

Keep in mind, this isn’t my video. Consider subscribing to the content creator or looking more into his published content. 🙂

Moving on, after doing a quick initial google search, this link popped up, it contains a list of 50 affirmations: https://www.lifehack.org/863537/self-affirmation

Also, Farheen Dhanjal, a fellow WordPress blogger, posted a list of affirmations to try out, on her blog: https://farheendhanjal.law.blog/2021/11/29/easily-attract-all-you-desire-21-affirmations-for-21-days-1-bonus-affirmation-for-the-new-year-2022iscalling/

Some ideas that come to mind to try and enhance the effectiveness of affirmations you come across in books and the internet is to assess and analyze the wording of the affirmations and the quality of it not only accept and read them and say out loud as-is but truly understand what you’re reading and see if it’s the correct or accurate words that you want to be said in accordance with changing your life for the better.

Doing what you’re saying adds a positive reinforcement element to the words and may aid in the effectiveness of the affirmation because it’s more truthful and you are proactively doing something to make it happen. For example, it doesn’t make sense to say something like, “I’m actively exercising and putting a great effort in and eating healthier because it’s only good for me and I feel good for making those life-changing decisions”, a quote I just made up, and let’s say you’re doing the opposite in your life, you can see the conflict of what you’re saying and what you’re doing (hypothetical example). You can however change that affirmation to be more truthful if you start exercising and started eating healthier.

Matching the affirmations with what’s relevant to you, your life, and what you want out of it and actively doing something to make it more truthful with what you’re saying can aid in the effectiveness of the affirmation resulting in it working. Also, to add to the quote mentioned in the previous paragraph, “I will continue to actively exercise and eat healthier and not give up because it’s better to be healthier and fit.” – If you mean what you say and do it, you’ve just taken measures into your own hands and on your way to positively transforming your life.

Another idea is to either use the affirmations as a base and change the wording slightly or just totally make your own wording with your creative writing skills–just make up good and helpful words that are more applicable to you and your goals.

Sometimes, saying the affirmation is not enough, I mean, some people say things and not do them or mean them…You can try recording your voice, using a voice recorder, reading the affirmation out loud, replaying the recorded audio, and listening to your own unique, confident voice, with a good message and a commanding tone or whatever tone you want to re-program your mind with.

Keep in mind, using the voice recorder, with recording and replaying your recorded message, you can change the wording as well (the affirmation), some people like hearing the words “You” instead of “I”, this small change can prove incredibly useful in using affirmations in your life and re-programming your mind. When I think about it, the “you” word is a word that people use to communicate with other people to describe them, and it’s not uncommon to hear someone say “You are <insert adjective>”, and someone can be positively or negatively affected by the wording and can have a dramatic effect in one’s life and the way they live. An example of words that can make you feel more confident or good is, “You can do whatever you set your mind to because you are a capable and an intelligent human being, teachable, hard working, and self-driven.”

Deviating from affirmations, you can read other types of helpful messages such as positive, helpful, quotes or advice with a voice recorder and replay them back and listen to them, to re-program your mind.

I read some affirmations and quotes from a script I compiled and used voice recording software, here’s a sample of them with my actual voice.

When listening to my voice, I feel the “You” version to be more impactful than the “I” version for me personally, but, when saying the words out loud, I feel as if the “I” version is more impactful as if I was saying a creed or a promise to myself. Also, although not affirmations, listening to the quotes sample immediately got me thinking about the words that have been said, a similar effect from listening to an audiobook with a good lesson to learn and think about.
